TPT METHLICK DUATHLON

A short event beside the river Ythan and around the Haddo estate

The village of Methlick stands at a pleasant crossroads beside the River Ythan, with shops, a garage and hotels serving the surrounding rural community of Methlick parish. The parish church, built in 1867 by the 6th Earl of Aberdeen, is an impressive building, and the burial enclosure of the Gordons of Haddo can be found at the old church nearby.

Leisure facilities include a recreation park, play area, outdoor bowling green and the newly opened Lairds cricket ground, the home of the M.C.C.  Clay pigeon shooting and numerous other outdoor activities at the Kingscliff Sporting Lodge, and fishing on the river Ythan.

Gight castle (click here for map) is now in a sadly ruinous state, but is still worth the walk. It was designed about 1560 by the same architect as the castles of Towie Barclay, Delgatie (both still occupied) and Craig. At the top of a steep wooded brae above the Ythan gorge, three miles north-west of Methlick, it is best reached on foot from the B9005 at Stonehouse, then 3/4 mile along a farm track. From it a path runs west down to the riverside. The grassy parkland around was once the setting of the Games of Gight, and it is a delightfully peaceful spot. The history of the castle's Gordon lairds was noticeably less so, many suffering violent deaths, until the 13th laird, Catherine Gordon, married 'Mad' Jack Byron, who gambled the estate away before the birth of their son - Lord Byron, the poet.
