Superb conditions for Orkney Middle Distance Triathlon

A note from Jake Vellacott on his Orkney race.....  (and TV appearance ??)

"On Saturday the 9th September I was on Scapa flow beach with a total race field of 27 entrants ,no wind, sunny, perfect conditions and what with the superb pasta party and the friendly atmosphere it made for a brilliant race day. Well worth the effort to get to. One to bear in mind for 2007, but could be tough in the windy conditions.!!"

Superb conditions for Orkney Middle Distance Triathlon Orkney's first middle distance event was a great success in superb conditions.  Individual competitors and team members enjoyed the fantastic race conditions and stunning Orkney scenery.

The swim took place in Scapa Bay, the cycle a 56 mile loop around the West Mainland of Orkney and the 1/2 marathon a 4 loop course around Kirkwall.

To add to the atmosphere a BBC film crew were present throughout the race, covering the race for "The Adventure Show".

Monikie Duathlon Series.

A note from organiser John Bremner about this coming winter series.....

Talking of Ironman distance racing....here's a short report from Jake & Barbara on their Roth '06 adventure.

" At long last the race report, Jake's and Babs' fun day at Roth' July 3, 2006.

After months of on-and-off training in the glorious Scottish weather we were once again crawling out of bed at 3.30am, muttering, "why are we here, whose idea was this etc.", but all dissent/mutiny quickly evaporated as we entered the race start point. About 3500 bikes were in racks, the canal swim looked very long, however, it was a glorious morning as the sun burnt off the mist.

Babs set off at 6.20am and breezed a 1hr 5 minute swim; I started 30 minutes later and managed 1hr 9 minutes.
The bike leg was on a fast smooth course of two laps, but windy.  Unfortunately, the temperature was 30 degrees and no cloud cover whatsoever.
Babs serenely swept round in 7.17 hours, I got round in 5 hours 36.

At this point all was going very well, I started the run and the first 10k were completed in just over an hour. Then, "oh my legs don't work, who put that 50kg weight on my head?" The next 5k were best forgotten forever! Then, after indulging in some delicious ProPlus, the remaining trot was fine.
Overall, it took 4 hours 50, bringing the total time to 11:48:07. Babs' run was steady at 5 hours 08, finishing with a grin in 13:37 hours. I, on the other hand, was a slobbering wreck, and the next morning a gibbering mess vowing never ever again.

Well, is that me retiring from IM distance? No way, given the chance to do another one....

Regards to all,
Jake and Babs "

NOTE: Barbara knocked a full HOUR from her 2005 time and Jake took half an hour of his 2005 time and dipped under the psychological 12 hour 'barrier'..  Congratulations all round. Can 2007 get any better ??
